Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972, in Missouri. He is the only child of Deborah nee Nelson and Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. The family is of English and German ancestry.

His father left him with his mother and moved to California, where he remarried and had two more children- Sarah and Michael. Young Marshall kept trying to reach out to his father, but sadly, all of his letters came back unopened and marked with “return to sender”.

For most of his childhood, he and Deborah moved a lot, often staying with family members. Many who knew him from the puberty period stated that Eminem was “a bit of a loner”. They also recall that he had been bullied often.

Before discovering the world of hip hop, Eminem aspired to become a comic-book artist, as he was keen on storytelling. So, during his high school days, he enjoyed English, but not English literature- he would always choose to read an excellent comic instead. He also disliked many other subjects. His poor grades resulted in him dropping out of Lincoln High School when he was 17.

Social workers described his mother as “having a very suspicious, almost paranoid personality”, so it wouldn’t be that surprising to hear that the two fought a lot. He worked multiple jobs so that he could help with bills-paying. Most of the paychecks he earned were taken away, and he was often thrown out of the house. When Deborah was out of the house, that’s when he would get some peace; he used it to write songs and blast the stereo.

He first started rapping when he was fourteen, joined by two more high school friends.

His early music days began with the group he formed with his childhood friends, named New Jacks. The group later joined Bassmint Productions, who decided to change their name to Soul Intent. He then teamed up with five other rappers to form another group, which they named D12. They released their first album in 2001, titled Devil’s Night.

Soon, Eminem signed the contract with Jeff and Mark Bass’ FBT Productions. Under their wing, the rapper recorded his debut album, named Infinite. But, despite the hard work and emotion put into it, the album was not a success.

However, the next one, which described Eminem’s angry alter ego- Slim Shady, attracted more attention. The Slim Shady EP is full of songs about drugs, mental issues, rape, and murder.

The Slim Shady LP followed suit- he had started working with idol Dr. Dre around the same time. Again, it was full of dark themes.

Until today, he released The Marshall Mathers LP, The Eminem Show, Relapse, Revival, and Kamikaze.

Back in 1987, the Scott twin sisters, Kimberly Anne and Dawn ran away from home. They were taken in by Eminem’s mother after meeting a then fifteen-year-old Marshall at one of his rap battles at the cafeteria of their school. Two years later, Eminem enrolled in an off-and-on relationship with Kimberly, or Kim, for short. The couple’s daughter Hailie was born on December 25, 1995. Kimberly and Marshall got married in 1999, but due to apparent trouble in paradise, they were divorced by the end of 2001.

Despite his often statements that he would never marry again, the rapper’s relationship with Kim rekindled, and they got married again, in early 2006. But, it did not last long, as the superstar filed for divorce in April that same year, only four months after the wedding ceremony took place.

He agreed to take custody over Hailie, but also his younger half-brother Nathan, Kim’s daughter from another relationship Whitney, and Kim’s sister’s daughter Alaina.
